Business Description

The processes involved in the production of leathers are divided into three main sub-processes. Typically, all true leathers will go through these three sub-processes. Some companies may also add a protective surface coating to the finished product. The three sub-processes are: tanning, tannering, and surface coating. If you have ever bought a piece of leather, you know that it will have gone through several stages.

The first step in the production process is sourcing the leather. This process involves buying a hide from a meat-raised animal. The hides are then processed. There are several steps to this process, which include dyeing the hide, pressing, rubbing, and ironing it. In some cases, the leather may even be embossed or brushed. When leather is finished, the manufacturer will apply a top coat.

Preparing the hide is another step. The leather can be degreased to remove oil, and the hide can be preserved by soaking in water. Then, the top layer of the hide, or dermis, is exposed. After the hide has been cleaned, a variety of tests are done to determine its strength and structural durability. The process of tanning leather also produces solid waste, and the leather manufacturers must ensure that the final product meets religious and cultural sensitivities.
