classified as an opioid analgesic, but it also has a unique dual mechanism of action

Understanding Tapentadol’s Mechanism

primarily act by binding to mu-opioid receptors, Tapentadol has a dual
mechanism. It works both as a mu-opioid receptor agonist and a norepinephrine
reuptake inhibitor (NRI). This dual-action allows it to provide effective pain relief

Nevertheless, Tapentadol is still a Schedule II controlled substance in the U.S.,
indicating a high potential for abuse, even if it is slightly lower than that of older
opioids.
