In Western cultures, an engagement ring is a ring that indicates that the person wearing it is engaged to be married. A ring is given as an engagement gift to a future spouse by a partner when they propose marriage or immediately after a marriage proposal is accepted. It is a formal agreement to marry in the future. Engagement rings are usually worn by women in Western countries, and they can contain diamonds or other jewels. The term “mangagement ring” refers to an engagement ring worn by a guy. Men and women may wear matching bands in some cultures, and engagement rings may also be worn as wedding rings. The ring is traditionally worn on the left hand’s ring finger in the Anglosphere, but habits vary greatly elsewhere in the world.
